How E-bike Shortlist works
This page explains where the numbers on this site come from, how models are chosen for a guide, how often things are re-checked, and what happens when we get something wrong.
Where the numbers come from
In the guides: every specification and price is read from the manufacturer's own product page, and every rule or safety figure from the public agency that publishes it (CPSC, BLM, Amtrak and the like). The date it was read is printed at the top of the guide and again at the end. No review sites, no forums, no retailer star ratings, no third-party spec databases.
Power, range, speed, weight: nominal and peak motor power are kept apart, because a headline "1,000 W" is usually the peak figure. Range, top speed and weight are manufacturer claims, reported as claims. We do not turn them into test results.
Prices in guides: the current selling price on the date checked. Crossed-out compare-at figures do not appear in a guide or in a comparison table.
Gaps stay gaps: when a manufacturer does not publish a figure — folded dimensions, a class label, battery watt-hours — the guide says "not stated". We do not estimate it, and we do not quietly borrow it from a retailer listing.
In the shopping feed: the product tiles come from a retailer's own affiliate product feed and refresh daily. Photo, name, price and any sale price are the store's own and are shown as supplied — which is why a tile can carry a compare-at price where a guide never does.
How models get into a guide
The shopper's question first. Models are lined up by the same intended use and frame type, then by the closest current price band. Where brands do not offer comparable products for the same question, we write a category guide instead of forcing a model-versus-model comparison.
Affiliate status is not a factor. Whether a brand runs an affiliate program has no bearing on which models are included or where they appear in a list. Some brands in the guides are partners and some are not; their models are listed the same way.
No paid placements. No brand pays to appear here, no brand sees or approves a guide before it goes up, and the site carries no advertising.
What we do not do
We have not ridden these bikes. There are no road tests, no ratings, no rankings, no "best overall" badge, and no scores carried over from a store's customer reviews. Nothing here is a claim about ride quality, brake feel, real-world range, durability or after-sales service. A spec sheet can take a long list down to two or three candidates; the test ride is still yours to do.
How often things are checked
The shopping feed refreshes daily, so a tile follows the store's own price and availability. Guides are re-read when a manufacturer changes a product page and, at the latest, whenever the guide is edited for any reason. The date checked is shown at the top of every guide and again in the block at the end, next to the sources used and the list of what we did not test.
Corrections
If a figure here is wrong, say so: [email protected]. What happens next is fixed. The number is read again on the manufacturer's page, the guide is corrected and its date checked is changed, and when a correction changes the advice rather than a digit, it is written into the guide's own text instead of being fixed silently. Allow a day or two for a reply.
Affiliate disclosure
Some links on E-bike Shortlist are affiliate links. We may earn a commission if you purchase through them, at no extra cost to you. Guide content is based on manufacturer- and retailer-published information unless otherwise noted.
Affiliate links are marked rel="sponsored" and disclosed on every page that carries one. They are the only commercial relationship on the site: no display advertising, no sponsored posts, no paid placement. What a brand can and cannot ask of us is set out on For brands; what this site records about your visit is on Privacy.
